How Jan Hanousek Uses Blended Teaching to Save Time for What Matters in His Financial Management Class

December 2025

Jan Hanousek

  • Assistant Professor, University of Memphis
  • Class: Financial Management
  • Delivery Mode: Asynchronous Online

The Challenge

  • Knowledge Gaps

Students were entering the class with a wide range of skill & knowledge levels, making it hard to support all students effectively

  • Publisher Assignments Weren’t Working

Building critical thinking skills requires an assessment design not offered by publishers, requiring Jan to spend hours building his own

  • Endless Emails

Increasing class sizes meant hours spent responding to emails asking for help and clarification, instead of more impactful tasks

  • The Need for Change

Prior to using Blended Teaching, Jan used a traditional text-based publisher platform, coupled with his own videos, which he would need to rerecord on a regular basis to keep them up-to-date.

With class sizes growing and grading time ballooning, Jan knew the course wasn’t sustainable long-term. Publisher tools saved time, but didn’t support the type of thinking he wanted students to develop.

  • “Very few students bought the textbook, and those that did typically didn’t read it.”

    Jan Hanousek, University of Memphis

Why Jan Chose Blended Teaching

  • No More Recording Videos

A complete set of videos for the class meant Jan could spend that time on more impactful teaching activities

  • Assignments that Build Critical Thinking Skills

Mini-cases provided real-world examples that helped students develop important skills

  • Easy Switching & Setup

Because Blended Teaching works just like a traditional textbook, Jan just needed to tell the bookstore that he’d be switching textbooks

  • Features Used
    • Blended Teaching’s multi-modal modules (video, text & practice problems with feedback)
    • “Mini-Case” Assignments
    • Auto-Grade Syncing
    • 1-Click Canvas Integration
    1. Jan selected the modules and assignments he wanted to use.
    2. He then set the points and due-dates in Blended Teaching, and then import into Canvas in under 2 minutes.
    3. Once everything was set up, Jan was able to book a Zoom call with the Blended Teaching team with as little as 15 minutes notice.

The Results

  • 20+ hours saved on class prep
  • 50% fewer emails from students asking for help
  • Higher quiz scores
  • Positive feedback from students on the video content

Jan Hanousek

Assistant Professor, University of Memphis

“Blended teaching allows students to learn at their own pace. If they don't understand something, they can replay the video as many times as they need to until it clicks.”
