How Blended Teaching Uses AI

We use AI to save Educators time. Educators stay in charge of teaching and grading, and we never use your data to train AI models.

In the Educator tools, AI can help you grade written answers, including handwritten answers on paper exams; draft quiz questions, slides and course materials from your course content; import quizzes and materials you already have; see how a Course is going, in plain language; and answer questions about your Courses in the analytics assistant.

The tools Students use to learn and take assessments contain no generative AI. The only AI a Student may meet is Fin, the assistant in our help chat, provided by Intercom.

To read handwriting on scanned paper exams, we use Google Cloud Vision, which turns handwriting into text.

An AI grade is a suggestion for the Educator to review. AI-drafted questions and materials are drafts for the Educator to check and edit.

Before we send anything to an AI model, we replace the Student names and email addresses held in our records with coded references. What a Student writes or scans, such as answers and images of handwriting, is sent as written for grading. To grade a written answer, we send the answer, the question and the marking guide. For a paper exam, we also send an image of the handwritten answer. Each is labelled with a coded reference, not the Student's name.

Course summaries use results for the whole class, not individual Students. The help chat works like any support chat: Fin sees what you type and your account details, so it can help you.

Our AI models come from OpenAI and Anthropic. These model providers do not use our data for training and do not store it for reuse; any provider retention is limited to short-term abuse monitoring.

Google Cloud Vision reads handwriting. Intercom provides Fin and hosts the help chat in the United States.

We never train or fine-tune AI models on Student or Educator data. We store all institution data in the United States. Our list of subprocessors is at https://www.blended-teaching.com/subprocessors.
